Quincy Johnson, a 40-year-old man, was at his Houston apartment on the evening of April 18, 2024, when his life was cut short. At approximately 7:10 p.m., Johnson was standing outside on his balcony at the complex located at 7959 Sunbury Street. According to witnesses, two male suspects walked by and opened fire, shooting Johnson before fleeing the scene. Houston Police Department patrol officers responded to a call and found Johnson unresponsive inside his apartment.
Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department pronounced him deceased from a gunshot wound.
The Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division immediately began an investigation. Based on witness statements and evidence from the scene, investigators developed descriptions of the two men involved. On May 2, the department released surveillance photos to the public, asking for help in identifying the suspects. They were described as two Black males, one wearing a red hoodie and the other a gray hoodie. The men were last seen in a green Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck.
The public’s assistance proved crucial. Acting on a tip, police arrested Jaquarius Lewis, 25, the following day, on May 3. Investigators identified Lewis as the shooter and charged him with murder in the 178th State District Court. A second male who appeared in the surveillance photos was also located by police; he was questioned and subsequently released without charges.
Jaquarius Lewis later pleaded guilty to the murder of Quincy Johnson. For his role in the killing, he was sentenced to serve 50 years in prison. The case is now closed.
