He was walking along Fairgreen Lane when a silver Lexus SUV pulled up beside him and the driver fired multiple shots, striking him fatally. The suspect, described as a light-skinned Black male with facial hair, then fled the scene in the vehicle. At the time of his death, Payton was on his way to pick up medicine for his elderly mother, who he lived with and cared for.
Houston police released
surveillance video of the incident in hopes of identifying the shooter. Despite the release of the video and a description of the suspect's vehicle, no arrests have been made, and the case remains under investigation. The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Payton's family has expressed their grief and confusion over the senseless act, as Sherman did not have any known conflicts with anyone.
