On December 20, 2023, 30-year-old Gary Norvelle Houston was fatally shot in north Harris County, Texas. The incident occurred at a gas station on Aldine Bender Road, where surveillance footage captured a suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Tyreq Anthoni Sanders, dancing and flashing a wad of cash inside the store shortly before the shooting.
Approximately 30 minutes after the initial footage, Sanders, accompanied by a group of men, ambushed Houston outside the gas station.
Sanders was seen hiding near the entrance of the Haverstock Hills apartments before emerging to shoot Houston multiple times, including four shots to the back. Despite his injuries, Houston attempted to flee in his vehicle but caused a chain-reaction crash that injured an older woman.
Following the incident, the Harris County Sheriff's Office identified Sanders as the primary suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Initial efforts to locate him were unsuccessful. However, on April 12, 2024, Sanders was apprehended by the Harris County Sheriff's Office District 2 Crime Reduction Units and charged with murder. He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail. Authorities have stated that no other suspects will face charges in this case.
The motive behind the shooting is believed to be a verbal disagreement between Houston and Sanders. Houston's mother, Alanka Houston, expressed her grief and disbelief, stating, "Those cowards shot my son in the back four times." She also questioned the rationale behind such a violent act over mere words.
Gary Houston was remembered by his family as a protective individual who loved his job and was looking forward to spending more time with his daughter. His tragic death has left a profound impact on his family and the local community.
