On December 30, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., 24-year-old Juvenal Antero was fatally shot during a home invasion at his apartment in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood of Dallas, Texas. Antero was at home with his pregnant wife, Elizabel Cardenas, and their 4-year-old son when two men knocked on their door at the Maderas Apartments on South St. Augustine Drive.
According to Cardenas, one of the men asked to borrow a plunger, but then displayed a firearm and attempted to force entry into the apartment. In an effort to protect his family, Antero retrieved his own weapon and positioned himself in front of his son. A struggle ensued, during which the intruders opened fire, striking Antero. Despite being wounded, Antero managed to return fire, though it is unclear if either suspect was injured. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Antero was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. His wife, who is expecting their second child, expressed profound grief over the loss, noting that Antero had been eagerly anticipating their upcoming prenatal appointment. The couple had previously experienced two miscarriages and were looking forward to welcoming their new baby.
In the aftermath of the incident, Dallas police released surveillance footage showing three suspects fleeing the scene and entering a red Kia Soul. The suspects are described as follows: one white or Hispanic male wearing all black with a mask; a second white or Hispanic male with a mustache and possibly glasses; and a third Black male wearing a red hoodie with the word "Abercrombie" on it. As of now, no arrests have been made, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing justice to Antero's family.
