On February 14, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., San Antonio police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1600 block of West Martin Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 62-year-old Wayne Louis Elley lying in a driveway with a gunshot wound to the chest. Elley was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Elley, known among the local community, had faced significant hardships prior to his death.
According to homeless advocate Susana Segura, Elley had been recovering from severe burns inflicted when someone set his tent on fire while he slept. Despite these challenges, Segura remembered him as a kind and intelligent individual with a "hippy heart" who spoke perfect Spanish and maintained a positive demeanor.
In the aftermath of the shooting, San Antonio Police Department and Crime Stoppers sought public assistance to identify the perpetrator. Investigators noted that witnesses reported neither seeing nor hearing anything suspicious at the time of the incident. A reward of up to $5,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest.
As of December 27, 2024, there have been no reports of arrests or identified suspects in connection with Elley's murder. The case remains unsolved, and authorities continue to encourage anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
