On February 26, 2024, at approximately 3:38 a.m., the Austin Police Department (APD) received a report of a vehicle parked in a field near the 2900 block of South U.S. Highway 183 southbound, close to Metropolis Drive and McCall Lane in southeast Austin. Upon arrival, officers discovered a maroon sedan just off the main highway. Adjacent to the vehicle, they found 32-year-old Rigoberto Castro-Momner lying on the ground with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him deceased at the scene at 3:54 a.m.
Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists were dispatched to process the scene and gather evidence. Preliminary assessments by APD suggested that this was an isolated incident, posing no immediate threat to the public. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the APD Homicide Tip Line at 512-974-TIPS or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with Castro-Momner's death. The case remains under active investigation as Austin's 11th homicide of 2024. Authorities continue to seek leads and encourage community members to come forward with any information that might assist in solving this case.
