In the early morning hours of July 22, 2017, a life was tragically cut short in Columbus, Georgia. Donald Matthews, a 26-year-old African American male, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, a violent end to an evening that began with a dispute inside a local restaurant. Matthews, a Specialist in the U.S. Army stationed at nearby Fort Benning, was a human resources specialist who had served a deployment in Afghanistan.
The events that led to his death began with an altercation at a TGI Friday's restaurant. An argument between Matthews and another man, later identified as 27-year-old Marcus Theodore Wiggins, escalated. Though both men left the establishment in separate vehicles, their paths crossed again at the intersection of River Road and Veterans Parkway. It was there that the disagreement turned deadly. Following the shooting, Matthews was transported to a hospital in a private vehicle, but the severity of his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 6:36 a.m.
The investigation into the death of Donald Matthews swiftly led to the identification of two suspects. Marcus Theodore Wiggins and another individual, Eddie Clayton, were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Wiggins faced a charge of murder for his role in the incident. He was subsequently extradited to Columbus and booked into the Muscogee County Jail. In his defense, Wiggins claimed that he had been physically attacked by Matthews and had acted in self-defense. The case brought attention to the issue of violence within the community and particularly highlighted the risks faced by military personnel.
