On June 3, 2021, 30-year-old Kailey Walker and her husband, Virgil 'Larry' Walker, 49, were fatally shot in their Galesburg, Michigan, apartment. The couple, who had been married since 2011, were remembered by family as being deeply devoted to each other and enjoying simple pleasures like playing board games, biking, and spending time with family. Kailey, a 2009 graduate of Galesburg-Augusta High School, was described as selfless with a never-ending smile.
The tranquility of their lives
was shattered when their neighbor, William Wolfe, then 31, knocked on their door and shot them without warning. According to court documents, Wolfe later confessed to the killings, telling investigators that he had done it because his neighbors were being too loud and he couldn't sleep. Another neighbor expressed shock at this claim, stating that the Walkers 'pretty much kept to themselves.' After the shooting, Wolfe returned to his apartment, said goodbye to his cat, and then drove to another location before calling 911 to report what he had done.
William Wolfe was quickly arrested and charged with two counts of open murder. Investigators noted that Wolfe's mental health may have played a role in the tragic events. In October 2022, a judge ruled that William Wolfe was not guilty by reason of insanity, meaning the murder case against him would not proceed further through the criminal justice system.
