In the winter of 2015, the community of Holland, Michigan, was shaken by a tragic event that unfolded in an apartment complex on Stratford Way. On the evening of December 7th, 37-year-old Mani Khounvongsa was at her apartment with her boyfriend, 40-year-old Gilberto Andrade-Pena. Their evening was violently interrupted by the arrival of 51-year-old Bountavee Nerasin, who was identified by friends as Khounvongsa's ex-boyfriend.
The situation escalated quickly as Nerasin, armed with a gun, opened fire. He shot Khounvongsa in the hallway outside of her apartment and then proceeded to shoot Andrade-Pena inside the residence. Both Khounvongsa and Andrade-Pena succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Two other individuals who were present in the apartment at the time were physically unharmed. Friends and family later suggested that the tragic incident was the result of a 'love triangle,' believing Nerasin was jealous of Khounvongsa's new relationship. At the time of her death, Khounvongsa was a mother of three children.
Following the shootings, a search for Nerasin ensued. Less than a day later, his body was discovered inside his parked vehicle outside of the Lao Buddhist Temple on Holland's North Side. Authorities determined that Nerasin had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Investigators concluded that Nerasin had specifically targeted Khounvongsa and Andrade-Pena. While it was discovered that Nerasin had a prior criminal conviction for a drug-related charge in another state, there was reportedly no indication of a violent past. The investigation into the double murder-suicide concluded with the death of the sole suspect.
