In a quiet home on Westland Court in Holland Township, a domestic argument tragically escalated into a double murder-suicide on April 29, 2018. The lives of 34-year-old Latthida Kommona and 51-year-old Thomas Rattanavong were cut short before the gunman, 43-year-old Phouthone 'Loy' Kaiyarath, took his own life. The incident, which unfolded in an upstairs bedroom of the residence where six adults and two children lived, was rooted in ongoing family strife.
Kaiyarath, who was the father of Latthida Kommona's five-year-old son, had brought a semi-automatic handgun to the home. The weapon was not registered in his name, and it remains unclear how he obtained it. Following a heated argument, Kaiyarath shot and killed both Kommona and Rattanavong. In the wake of the violence, he then turned the gun on himself.
Neighbors described the family as generally quiet and courteous, often hosting large gatherings. Friends and family of Kaiyarath expressed their shock, remembering him as a kind-hearted person and a devoted father to his three sons. The tragic event left the community reeling and highlighted the devastating potential of domestic disputes. In the aftermath, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist with the funeral expenses for Thomas Rattanavong. Both Latthida Kommona and Phouthone Kaiyarath were cremated. The investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office concluded that the incident was a murder-suicide, and as the perpetrator was deceased, no arrests were made.
