On February 1, 2024, at approximately 12:02 a.m., Austin Police Department officers responded to a reported gun incident at the Super 8 Motel located at 4200 South Interstate Highway 35 in Austin, Texas. Upon arrival, officers heard gunshots and discovered 41-year-old Rahsaan Dobbins, who was nude and armed, having just shot another man on the motel grounds. Dobbins complied with police commands and was taken into custody without further incident.
The victim was identified as 45-year-old Warnero Devoron Young, a resident of Seguin, Texas. Emergency Medical Services attempted life-saving measures; however, Young was pronounced deceased at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that Dobbins was experiencing a state of paranoia when he opened his motel room door and fatally shot Young, who was on the stairs of the motel at the time. Dobbins admitted to authorities that he did not know Young prior to the shooting.
Dobbins was subsequently booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of first-degree felony murder. The Austin Police Department has classified this incident as the city's seventh homicide of 2024. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to contact the Austin Police Department or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
Young, born on February 24, 1978, in Humboldt, Tennessee, was a 1999 graduate of Seguin High School and a United States Army veteran who served as an Automated Logistical Specialist. He was known for his humility, quick wit, and dedication to helping others. Young is survived by his parents, children, siblings, and numerous other family members and friends.
