On the evening of February 27, 2024, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Harlingen police responded to reports of gunfire near the Arroyo Hike and Bike Trail close to McKelvey Park. Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of 19-year-old Jonathan Albert Trancoso, who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested 20-year-old Harlingen resident Cameron Carlos Molina in connection with Trancoso's death.
Molina was charged with first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and possession of marijuana. His bonds were set at $1 million for the murder charge, $8,000 for tampering with evidence, and $1,500 for marijuana possession.
Trancoso, a 2022 graduate of Harlingen High School and member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, is survived by his daughter, parents, two brothers, and grandparents. Funeral services were held on March 8, 2024, at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas.
