Christopher Angel Paredes, a 17-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically shot and killed on October 6, 2021, in Harlingen, Texas. The incident occurred at the Sunshine Apartments located at the 1600 block of Sam Houston Boulevard. Harlingen police received multiple calls reporting gunshots at approximately 7:45 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Christopher Angel Paredes deceased at the scene, along with two other individuals who were injured.
One of the injured victims was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance, while the other walked into the hospital with similar injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of two suspects. Phillip Michael Martinez, a 19-year-old male, was identified as the primary suspect. He was apprehended while driving a gray Nissan sedan and was subsequently charged with murder, a first-degree felony, and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, also first-degree felonies. Martinez's bond was set at $1 million for the murder charge and $65,000 for each of the aggravated assault charges, totaling $1,195,000. Additionally, 18-year-old Deann Ruiz was arrested and charged with tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony. Her bond was set at $17,000.
Further legal proceedings revealed that Phillip Michael Martinez was indicted on a murder charge and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The indictment stated that Martinez intentionally or knowingly caused the death of Christopher Angel Paredes by shooting him with a firearm. Martinez also shot and wounded Richard David Perales, Christopher's brother, during the same incident. Martinez was formally arraigned and later pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to 50 years in state prison for the murder of Christopher Angel Paredes and an additional 20 years for the aggravated assault charges.
Christopher Angel Paredes was a senior at Harlingen High School, where he was an active member of the basketball team, an auto collision student, and a leader in his church. His untimely death left a profound impact on the community, and the legal proceedings against the suspects continue to unfold.
