On May 6, 2024, 21-year-old Sherwin Mireles was fatally shot in east Harris County, Houston, Texas. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. at a property located on Brownsville Street, known in the community as a chop shop—a site for dismantling stolen vehicles and distributing their parts.
Mireles had been assisting a friend in locating a stolen truck, which they believed was at this location based on GPS tracking information.
Accompanied by two others, Mireles entered the property by jumping over a fence. Upon encountering the property owner, Jorge Zuniga-Martinez, Mireles reportedly apologized and attempted to leave. Despite this, Zuniga-Martinez allegedly shot Mireles multiple times, resulting in his death at the scene.
Law enforcement officials, including the Harris County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene following a 911 call from Zuniga-Martinez, who reported shooting an intruder. Investigators discovered numerous automotive components on the property, corroborating its reputation as a chop shop and a dumping ground for stolen vehicles and parts.
Following the investigation, 49-year-old Jorge Zuniga-Martinez was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Mireles's death. He was subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail. The case drew significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the illegal activities associated with the property.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was organized by Brianda Reyes to support Mireles's family with funeral expenses. The community mourned the loss of a young man who was attempting to help a friend recover stolen property when he met his untimely death.
