On September 14, 2021, 34-year-old Demrick Thomas, a Black man from Houston, Texas, was fatally shot at a Valero gas station in the area of Northborough and Meadowfern Drive. The incident began when Thomas and his girlfriend parked next to another vehicle, causing a minor "door ding" to the vehicle. This led to a heated altercation between Thomas and the occupant of the other vehicle. The confrontation escalated, and Thomas was shot multiple times by the other individual.
He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Houston police released images of a white Mercedes C Class sedan and a female person of interest believed to be involved in the incident. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Elijah Kuluanya, was later arrested and charged with murder. Surveillance footage and cell phone video captured the heated moments leading up to the shooting, showing Thomas stepping out of his car to confront the suspect.
In the aftermath, Thomas' family, including his mother Kimberly Jackson, expressed their grief and called for justice.
