On June 9, 2023, 47-year-old Daniel Arguijo was fatally shot outside his residence at the Palms at Cypress Station apartments in Houston, Texas. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and observed a man standing over Arguijo's body, firing additional rounds before fleeing the scene. The assailant was identified as Melvin Walker, a 60-year-old neighbor with a history of criminal offenses.
Investigations revealed that a day prior to the murder, Walker had expressed to a witness that Arguijo owed him money and that he intended to take action. This motive was substantiated during court proceedings, where it was disclosed that Walker had confronted Arguijo about the alleged debt before the fatal shooting. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex captured Walker fleeing the scene immediately after the incident.
Following the murder, Walker remained at large and, on June 26, committed another violent crime. He was caught on video assaulting an 86-year-old woman in her north Houston home, placing her in a chokehold before burglarizing her residence. The elderly victim survived but required extensive medical treatment. Walker was arrested on June 27 and charged with aggravated robbery and burglary related to this assault.
Subsequent to his arrest, authorities connected Walker to Arguijo's murder. On June 30, he was formally charged with the homicide. Given his extensive criminal record, including previous incarcerations for various offenses dating back to the 1980s, Walker was deemed a habitual offender. During court appearances, the judge denied him bond, citing the ongoing threat he posed to the community. Walker's next court date was scheduled for late August 2023.
The arrest brought a measure of relief to both Arguijo's family and the community, who had been on edge following the violent incidents. Family members of the elderly assault victim expressed gratitude for the swift apprehension of Walker, attributing it to public awareness and media coverage.
