On May 9, 2024, at approximately 8:07 p.m., the Austin Police Department responded to multiple reports of a shooting at the Canyon Ridge Apartments, located at 12118 Walnut Creek Crossing in North Austin. Upon arrival, officers discovered 27-year-old Isaac Jimenez deceased on the second floor of Building 5. A second victim was found near Building 6 with gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital.
A third individual was located at a nearby Whataburger on North Lamar Boulevard, also with gunshot wounds, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Investigations revealed that Jimenez was inside an apartment during a disturbance when he was fatally shot. Detectives believe that Michael Carter, 22, and Jontel Boyce, 23, were involved in the incident. Carter was arrested on June 25, 2024, and charged with murder. Boyce was arrested and charged with tampering with physical evidence after he was observed removing items from a vehicle at the Whataburger parking lot.
The investigation indicated that Carter and Boyce entered an apartment unit occupied by Jimenez, leading to a confrontation. During the altercation, Jimenez fired two shots from a .380 caliber firearm, while Carter and Boyce each discharged .40 caliber pistols into the bedroom from the kitchen/living room area, resulting in Jimenez's death. Evidence suggested that Carter and Boyce attempted to conceal their involvement in the shooting.
As of the latest available information, Carter remains in the Travis County Jail on a $500,000 bond for murder, a first-degree felony. Boyce is also held in the Travis County Jail on a $75,000 bond for possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony. It is unclear if Boyce will face additional charges related to the shooting.
