In the early morning hours of January 5, 2026, the life of 19-year-old Luke Bradburn was tragically cut short in a downtown Austin hotel room. A White male, Luke was remembered by loved ones for his humor, creativity, and the quiet kindness he extended to those around him. He had a passion for fashion and design, with aspirations of building his own brand, and was a competitive athlete who had qualified for the Junior Olympics in track during his first year of competition.
The events
that led to his death began with a car crash earlier that day. Bradburn had been driving a vehicle belonging to 20-year-old Maximillian Salinas. After the crash, Bradburn and others who were with him returned to the Cambria Hotel on East Avenue. An argument reportedly ensued between Bradburn and Salinas regarding payment for the damages to the vehicle.
Austin Police officers and emergency medical services responded to a report of a gunshot at the hotel at approximately 6:55 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Luke Bradburn with significant injuries. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:33 a.m. The investigation that followed identified this as the city's third homicide of the year.
The day after the shooting, on January 6, 2026, authorities arrested Maximillian Matthew Salinas, a Hispanic male. He has been charged with the murder of Luke Bradburn. Witnesses at the hotel reported hearing a gunshot and seeing Salinas leave the room where Bradburn was found. One witness stated they saw Salinas holding a gun in the hotel room shortly after the car crash.
