At approximately 12:04 p.m., police responded to reports of a disturbance and discovered 71-year-old Vahid Khaledi unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The altercation reportedly began when Khaledi asked another patron to "keep it down," leading to a verbal dispute.
The situation escalated when 33-year-old Humberto Paz allegedly produced a 9mm Ruger handgun and fatally shot Khaledi.
Paz was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder and second-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $3.25 million. Subsequent investigations revealed that Paz had served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 2008 to 2016 and had a history of mental health issues, though no prior threats had been reported.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Brownsville Public Library temporarily closed its main branch and increased security measures at both of its locations to ensure the safety of patrons. The library reopened to the public on May 18, 2024, resuming regular operating hours.
As of December 2024, legal proceedings against Paz are ongoing. His competency to stand trial has been questioned, leading to multiple rescheduled hearings. A competency hearing is now scheduled for January 6, 2025, to assess his mental fitness for trial.
The family of Vahid Khaledi, described as a peaceful man who enjoyed reading and spending time with his nieces and nephews, has been deeply affected by his loss. They initiated a fundraising campaign to cover funeral expenses and transport his body to Houston, where most of his family resides.
