Edgar Barrera, a 33-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on August 4, 2021, in Brownsville, Texas. Barrera was found with a gunshot wound inside a white vehicle that had collided with two other vehicles outside a small apartment complex on the 5400 block of Boca Chica Boulevard. Investigators believe that Barrera was driving the vehicle when he was shot.
A number of shell casings were found at the scene, but it was unclear how many times he had been shot.
Following the incident, Brownsville police executed arrest warrants on three individuals accused of killing Barrera. Hector Hugo Lopez, 24, his brother Carlos Alberto Lopez, 20, and Michael Rodriguez were arrested and each charged with murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, and tampering with physical evidence. Hector Hugo Lopez and Carlos Alberto Lopez were arrested at a residence in the southeast side of Brownsville, while Rodriguez was arrested in West Texas with the help of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Taskforce. The Lopez brothers were arraigned with bonds totaling $1,040,000 each.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Hector Hugo Lopez pleaded guilty to the murder of Edgar Barrera. In exchange for his plea, a charge of tampering with physical evidence was dismissed. Lopez was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Carlos Alberto Lopez and Michael Rodriguez, who have pleaded not guilty, remain held in the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center on $1,015,000 bonds each. The tampering with evidence charge against them stems from their attempt to hide a motor vehicle with the intent to impair its availability as evidence in any subsequent investigation or official proceeding related to the offense.
