In the early evening of November 19, 2015, Kristy Lynn Mitchell, a 49-year-old woman from Excelsior Springs, Missouri, was in Ridgeland, Mississippi, for a business conference. She and her colleagues from the Excelsior Springs Job Corps Center were staying at a local hotel and decided to walk to a nearby steakhouse for dinner. As they made their way through the restaurant's parking lot, a blue Mustang pulled up alongside them.
A man inside the vehicle opened fire, striking Mitchell in the abdomen. The car then sped away, leaving a scene of chaos and disbelief. Restaurant workers and her co-workers rushed to her side to provide first aid until emergency services arrived. Mitchell was transported to a nearby hospital where she underwent surgery, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries several hours later. Before she passed, she was able to provide a description of her attacker to the police. The seemingly random and senseless act of violence left her family, including her husband, two children, and four grandchildren, devastated.
The investigation into Kristy Lynn Mitchell's murder quickly became part of a larger, more terrifying picture of a violent crime spree. Within a span of about an hour and a half, a man in a blue Mustang had been involved in multiple shootings across the Jackson and Ridgeland areas. Earlier that evening, another woman, Suzanne Hogan, was shot and killed at a gas station in Jackson. The same individual was also reported to have shot at a JATRAN bus and into a house in Jackson. The joint investigation by the Ridgeland and Jackson Police Departments led them to a suspect, 22-year-old Zehulum Lael James of Jackson. He was located and apprehended at his mother's apartment shortly after the string of violent acts. Authorities also found the blue Mustang and the handgun that was used in the murders.
Zehulum James was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Kristy Lynn Mitchell, as well as the other crimes committed that evening. During his trial in Madison County, James asserted an insanity defense. However, after evaluations by multiple forensic psychiatrists who testified that he was not insane at the time of the murder, the jury was not convinced. After deliberation, the jury unanimously found him guilty of the murder of Kristy Lynn Mitchell. Following his conviction, Zehulum James was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. The successful prosecution brought a measure of justice to the family of Kristy Lynn Mitchell, though the question of why he chose to take her life in such a random and brutal manner remains unanswered.
