A welfare check on Mother's Day led to the tragic discovery of a triple homicide in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Ida Thomas Welch, a 76-year-old female, was found deceased in her home on Old Canton Road alongside her two daughters, 56-year-old Vicky Renee Welch and 42-year-old Crystal Lynn Welch. Family members had contacted the Ridgeland Police Department on Sunday, May 12, 2024, concerned about the well-being of the occupants.
Upon entering the residence, officers found the three women in the living room, all of whom had been fatally shot.
The investigation, with assistance from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, quickly identified Ida's son, Ivory James Welch III, as the primary suspect. Authorities believe the women were killed on Saturday, the day before their bodies were discovered. An arrest warrant for three counts of murder was issued for Ivory Welch, who had fled Mississippi after the killings. His vehicle was tracked through Dallas, indicating he was on the run.
A multi-state manhunt involving the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force ensued. Ivory Welch's vehicle was eventually located in Arizona. On Monday, May 13, Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers attempted to apprehend him. When confronted, Welch reportedly fired upon the troopers. The officers returned fire, and he was fatally wounded in the gunfight, bringing a swift and violent end to the search. Investigators revealed that Ivory Welch had a criminal history, including past charges of domestic violence against another family member and assault. The motive for the tragic killing of his mother and sisters has not been released.
