On Mother's Day, May 12, 2024, a beloved law professor and social justice advocate, 42-year-old Crystal Lynn Welch, was found dead in a Ridgeland, Mississippi home. Her life, along with the lives of her mother, Ida Thomas Welch, 76, and her sister, Vicky Renee Welch, 56, was tragically cut short in a triple homicide that sent shockwaves through the community.
Family members, concerned for their welfare, had contacted the Ridgeland Police Department, leading to the heartbreaking discovery of the three women, all of whom had been shot to death.
The investigation quickly identified a primary suspect: Ivory James Welch III, the son of Ida and the brother of Crystal and Vicky. An arrest warrant was issued, and a manhunt was initiated by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. The search for Welch III spanned multiple states, ultimately leading authorities to Arizona. There, state troopers located him, but the attempt to take him into custody resulted in a violent confrontation. When troopers tried to apprehend Welch III, he opened fire on them.
