On Mother's Day, May 12, 2024, family members concerned for the welfare of the Welch family contacted the Ridgeland Police Department in Mississippi. Upon entering the home on Old Canton Road, officers discovered a tragic scene. Three women had been shot to death inside the residence. The victims were identified as 76-year-old Ida Thomas Welch, and her two daughters, 56-year-old Vicky Renee Welch and 42-year-old Crystal Lynn Welch.
The investigation quickly pointed to one suspect: Ida's
son and the brother of Vicky and Crystal, Ivory James Welch III. Evidence indicated that he had fled Mississippi after the shootings, with his vehicle being tracked through Dallas. An arrest warrant was issued, and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force initiated a search for him.
The manhunt for Ivory James Welch III came to a dramatic and fatal conclusion in Arizona. On the Monday following the discovery of the bodies, his vehicle was spotted by Arizona State Troopers. When they attempted to apprehend him, Welch brandished a firearm and opened fire on the troopers. In the ensuing gunfight, Ivory James Welch III was fatally wounded. Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers noted that the department had previous encounters with him for domestic violence and assault in 2006 and 2012, respectively. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations assisted the Ridgeland Police in the homicide investigation.
