On June 1, 2024, 22-year-old Angel Viviano Montoya was fatally shot in Brownsville, Texas. The incident occurred around 6:24 p.m. at a barbershop located in the 2500 block of East University Boulevard. Montoya had arranged to meet two individuals in the parking lot to sell a firearm. During the transaction, he was shot and managed to run back into the barbershop, where he collapsed. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Brownsville Independent School District police officers located the suspect vehicle, a red Chevy Colorado with Mexican license plates, at the 600 block of East Adams Street. The driver evaded an initial traffic stop but was later apprehended by Brownsville police at the 800 block of East Taylor Street. Three individuals were detained; among them, 18-year-old Jose Luis Ibarra and a juvenile were charged in connection with Montoya's death. Ibarra faced charges including first-degree murder, engaging in organized criminal activity, forgery, and evading arrest, with his bond set at $3.55 million.
In response to this tragedy, the Brownsville Police Department emphasized the importance of safety during in-person transactions, especially those arranged online. They recommended utilizing designated Safe Exchange Zones, specifically set up to provide a secure environment for such activities. These zones are located in the main parking lot of the Brownsville Police Department at 600 East Jackson Street and at the department’s eastside station at 2900 Southmost Road.
Angel Montoya's untimely death serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers associated with private transactions involving firearms. The community mourns his loss, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure justice is served.
