On July 14, 2024, at approximately 5:15 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a shooting call in the Victory Park neighborhood near the intersection of North Houston Street and Nowitzki Way. Upon arrival, officers found 18-year-old Jake Reynosa lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that Reynosa and three companions were walking in the area when they were approached by individuals in a maroon sedan. Two teenage girls exited the vehicle and engaged Reynosa in conversation, requesting his phone to exchange Instagram information. Meanwhile, two male suspects, identified as 19-year-old Christopher Gaines Jr. and 18-year-old Isaiah Simmons, were dropped off nearby and began approaching the group. Sensing danger, Reynosa and his friends attempted to flee. Simmons chased Reynosa and fatally shot him in the back near the intersection of Houston Street and Nowitzki Way. After the shooting, Simmons reportedly took Reynosa's phone before fleeing the scene with the other suspects in the sedan, driven by 19-year-old Latraveone Wherry.
The suspects' vehicle was later identified as stolen during an earlier aggravated robbery and carjacking. After a brief pursuit, police apprehended the two teenage girls, aged 15 and 16, who were subsequently charged with capital murder. Their identities have not been released due to their ages. In the following weeks, authorities arrested Simmons and Gaines, both charged with capital murder and held on substantial bail amounts. On August 6, 2024, Wherry was also taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Task Force and charged with capital murder.
According to police reports, the group had been driving around seeking individuals to rob, with an earlier attempted robbery in the Victory Park area that same day. The tragic death of Jake Reynosa has deeply affected his family and the community, highlighting the senselessness of violent crimes perpetrated by young individuals.
