On the night of August 29, 2024, Dallas Police Officer Darron Burks, aged 46, was fatally shot in a targeted attack near the Oak Cliff Community Center in Dallas, Texas. Officer Burks, a former high school math teacher who had recently transitioned to law enforcement to further serve his community, was approached by 30-year-old suspect Corey Cobb-Bey. Cobb-Bey initiated a brief conversation with Burks while recording the encounter on his cellphone.
Without provocation, he then drew a handgun and shot Officer Burks as he sat in his patrol vehicle.
Following the initial shooting, Senior Corporal Jamie Farmer arrived at the scene in response to a distress call. Cobb-Bey fired at Farmer, injuring him in the leg. Shortly thereafter, Senior Corporal Karissa David reached the location and was met with multiple gunshots from Cobb-Bey, one of which struck her in the face, resulting in critical injuries that left her blind in both eyes. Despite her injuries, David managed to return fire before Cobb-Bey fled the scene.
A high-speed pursuit ensued, culminating on an expressway north of Highway 121. Cobb-Bey exited his vehicle armed with a shotgun and advanced toward the officers, pointing the weapon at them. In response, multiple officers discharged their firearms, fatally wounding Cobb-Bey. The Dallas Police Department later confirmed that the attack was premeditated, supported by evidence collected from Cobb-Bey's social media activities.
