Gary Don McCarthy, a 33-year-old male police officer with the Dallas Police Department, tragically lost his life on February 26, 1988. Officer McCarthy was working an off-duty job as a security officer at a grocery store when he was shot and killed during an armed robbery. The incident occurred at the intersection of North Hampton Road and Singleton Boulevard. McCarthy was shot in the chest by an armed suspect while trying to protect the store manager.
Despite returning fire, Officer McCarthy did not hit the shooter. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect, Vincent Cooks, was apprehended several days later. Cooks was identified by a witness and arrested. He was convicted of the murder of Officer McCarthy and sentenced to death. Cooks was executed by lethal injection on December 12, 2001. The case highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, even when off-duty, and the severe consequences for those who commit violent crimes against them.
Officer McCarthy had served with the Dallas Police Department for just over a year and is remembered for his dedication and bravery. He is survived by his wife and two children. His death is a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by police officers in the line of duty.
