Clinton R. Allen, a 25-year-old African American man, tragically died on March 10, 2013, in Dallas, Texas. Known affectionately as "Big Baby," Allen was a beloved son, brother, and father to twin boys. His death was the result of a fatal shooting by Officer Clark Staller of the Dallas Police Department.
On the day of his death, Officer Staller responded to a disturbance call at an East Oak Cliff apartment complex. During the encounter, Allen and the officer struggled, and Allen allegedly choked the officer. Officer Staller used his TASER twice on Allen, but when Allen continued to assault him, Staller shot Allen seven times, once at close range in the back. It was later revealed that Allen had PCP in his system at the time.
The incident sparked significant controversy and public outcry, particularly from Allen's family and community members who believed the shooting was unjustified. Clinton's mother, Collette Flanagan, founded the organization Mothers Against Police Brutality in response to her son's death, advocating for criminal law reform and an end to police violence against Black people.
Despite the public outcry and protests, a Dallas County grand jury cleared Officer Staller of any criminal charges in October 2013. The grand jury determined that there was not enough evidence to indict Staller, and he was also cleared in an internal police investigation. This decision further fueled the debate over police accountability and the treatment of unarmed Black individuals by law enforcement.
Clinton Allen's death remains a poignant example of the broader issues surrounding police brutality and the need for systemic change in law enforcement practices. His story is a reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in communities of color.
