In the early hours of November 1, 2024, a fatal shooting occurred at Michelobos Sports Bar, located at 900 East Braker Lane in Austin, Texas. Austin Police Department officers responded to a "Shoot/Stab Hotshot" call at approximately 1:43 a.m., discovering two individuals with gunshot wounds upon arrival. The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Tyler Cochran, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:05 a.m. The other individual, 20-year-old Clayton Taitague, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he remained in critical but stable condition.

Investigations revealed that Cochran and Taitague were involved in a verbal altercation that escalated into a physical confrontation. During the struggle, Taitague obtained a firearm and shot Cochran multiple times. A security employee of Michelobos Sports Bar witnessed the incident and, acting in self-defense, shot Taitague to prevent further violence. Taitague was placed under arrest and is facing a first-degree murder charge, which will be formally processed upon his release from medical care.

The area surrounding Michelobos Sports Bar has been identified by law enforcement as a hotspot for criminal activity, with a significant increase in calls for service over the past year. In 2023, there were 34 calls for service, which nearly doubled to 61 calls in 2024, including reports of shootings, aggravated assaults, and robberies. Austin Police Department officials have been collaborating with property owners and business operators since April to address safety concerns and reduce the incidence of violent crimes in the vicinity.

Friends and acquaintances of Tyler Cochran remember him as a lively and loving individual. At the time of his death, Cochran was living with his girlfriend in College Station and maintained a steady job in construction. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Austin Police Department or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to an arrest.
