On January 4, 2023, 20-year-old Nicholas "Nicky" Tiefer of Vista, California, was fatally shot in San Marcos. The incident occurred near the 1100 block of Borden Road, where deputies found Tiefer in the passenger seat of a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. He was airlifted to a hospital and placed on life support. Despite medical efforts, Tiefer was pronounced dead on January 7, 2023.

Another victim, 19-year-old Jesus Garcia of San Marcos, was found on the ground near the entrance of a nearby park with gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the hospital on the day of the shooting. Both Tiefer and Garcia were graduates of San Marcos High School and were known to be friends.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department launched a homicide investigation into the double-fatal shooting. By early February 2023, two juvenile suspects had been arrested in connection with the case. A 17-year-old male was apprehended in Riverside on January 31, followed by the arrest of a 15-year-old male at his Oceanside residence on February 1. Both suspects were booked into the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility on two counts of murder.

Investigators indicated that the suspects did not know the victims personally. However, it is believed that the meeting was arranged for the illegal sale of vape products. The exact motivation and circumstances surrounding the crime remain under investigation.

In the wake of the tragedy, family and friends mourned the loss of Tiefer, remembering him as a beloved son, brother, and friend, as well as an all-star high school football player. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with medical and memorial expenses.

The community continues to seek answers and justice for the untimely deaths of Nicholas Tiefer and Jesus Garcia. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Sheriff's Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
