Summary based on 11 sources
On January 4, 2023, at approximately 1:30 p.m., 19-year-old Jesus Garcia and his friend, 20-year-old Nicholas Tiefer, were fatally shot near the 1300 block of West Borden Road in San Marcos, California. Deputies responding to reports of an assault found Garcia lying near a park entrance with gunshot wounds to his upper body, while Tiefer was discovered in a nearby vehicle with a neck wound. Both victims were transported to a hospital, where Garcia was pronounced dead that evening; Tiefer succumbed to his injuries three days later.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation into the double homicide. In early February 2023, two male juveniles, aged 15 and 17, were arrested in connection with the shootings. The 17-year-old was apprehended in Riverside on January 31, while the 15-year-old was taken into custody at his Oceanside residence on February 1. Both suspects were booked into the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility on two counts of murder.

Investigators revealed that the suspects did not know the victims personally. However, evidence suggested that the meeting was arranged for the illegal sale of vape products. The exact circumstances and motivations behind the shooting remained under investigation at that time. Authorities urged anyone with additional information to contact the Sheriff's Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers to assist in the ongoing inquiry.

The tragic deaths of Garcia and Tiefer, both San Marcos High School graduates, deeply affected the local community. Garcia was remembered as a loving son, brother, and friend, with a passion for soccer, having played for the San Marcos United Soccer team and the San Marcos Revolution Soccer team. Tiefer was known as an all-star high school football player and a friend to many. Their families set up GoFundMe campaigns to help cover funeral expenses and commemorate their lives.
