On January 21, 2023, 17-year-old Khalil Marwan Saleem II was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting at Silverado Park in Long Beach, California. Khalil, a student at Lakewood High School and a member of the football team, was playing basketball at the park when an SUV drove by and opened fire. An unidentified individual at the basketball courts returned fire at the vehicle, which fled the scene before police arrived. Two other individuals present at the courts sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident.
In the months following the shooting, the Long Beach Police Department conducted an extensive investigation that led to the arrest of four teenage suspects. On March 16, 2023, detectives apprehended a 16-year-old male from Long Beach and a 17-year-old male from Signal Hill. Both were charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder and were held without bail.
Subsequently, on July 11, 2023, two additional 16-year-old male suspects from Long Beach were arrested in connection with Khalil's death. These arrests brought the total number of individuals detained for the crime to four. Detectives believe all four suspects were involved in the murder and have indicated that the motive behind the shooting was gang-related. However, Khalil's family has stated that he was not involved with any gangs and was simply at the park to play basketball that day.
The arrests of these teenagers highlight a concerning trend of juveniles being implicated in violent crimes, including murder. Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish emphasized the need for community involvement to address and disrupt this cycle of violence affecting the city's youth. As the legal proceedings continue, the community remembers Khalil as a promising young man whose life was tragically cut short.
