An African American man named Hussein Murray, 72, was tragically killed in a home invasion in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The incident unfolded when two men, posing as DTE energy workers investigating a gas leak, gained access to the Murray residence. The perpetrators were later identified as Carlos Hernandez and Joshua Zuazo.
Once inside, Murray was taken to the basement and brutally attacked, while his wife was restrained with duct tape.
The assailants then ransacked the home, demanding money and jewelry before fleeing the scene. After the suspects left, Murray's wife managed to call for help, initially believing her husband had been kidnapped. Tragically, authorities discovered Hussein Murray's body in the basement of his home. An autopsy later determined that the cause of death was neck compression and blunt force trauma to the head and neck, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of Carlos Hernandez as a suspect. He was apprehended in Shreveport, Louisiana, more than a thousand miles from the crime scene. The second suspect, Joshua Zuazo, was also taken into custody. Investigators believe the crime was a targeted attack, possibly connected to Murray's ownership of a pawn and jewelry shop in Hamtramck. Evidence presented during the trial included text messages between the defendants, which prosecutors argued showed weeks of planning, including the theft of a truck and the creation of fake ID badges to carry out their scheme.
Both Carlos Hernandez and Joshua Zuazo faced a trial with two separate juries. They were ultimately found guilty of first-degree felony murder and unlawful imprisonment. The convictions came nearly a year after the murder. The family of Hussein Murray expressed their satisfaction with the verdict, stating that it would help them begin to heal, though nothing could bring their loved one back. Both men were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
