On April 9, 2023, at approximately 7:00 p.m., 50-year-old Lannie Ross was fatally shot in the 3200 block of Filbert Street in West Oakland, California. Officers from the Oakland Police Department (OPD) responded to the scene after being alerted by the city's ShotSpotter technology. Upon arrival, they found Ross suffering from at least one gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, OPD identified 29-year-old Sean Bryant of Antioch as the primary suspect in Ross's death. Bryant was reportedly captured on camera arguing with Ross about money moments before the fatal shooting. On June 1, 2023, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Bryant was arrested in Stockton, California. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office subsequently charged him with homicide.

In July 2024, Bryant accepted a plea deal, pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for the shooting death of Lannie Ross. The specific motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been fully disclosed by authorities.
