On the night of May 31, 2023, 18-year-old Billy Scott Jr., a senior at Grant Union High School in Sacramento, California, was fatally shot just hours before his scheduled graduation. Scott was in a car with two others in the North Highlands area when an individual approached and fired into the vehicle, striking him. Despite being injured, Scott managed to drive to the intersection of Grand Avenue and Marysville Boulevard, near his high school, where he flagged down a Twin Rivers School Resource
Officer. He was then transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries early the following morning.
In the immediate aftermath, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into the shooting. On June 3, 2023, a 17-year-old male suspect was arrested in connection with Scott's death. Authorities revealed that Scott had been attempting to sell a replica firearm to the suspect when the incident occurred. It remains unclear whether the shooting resulted from the discovery that the firearm was fake or if it was a premeditated robbery. The Sheriff's Office noted that there were no prior records indicating that Scott knew the suspect or had engaged in similar transactions before.
