Syncere Dixon, a 19-year-old former high school football player from Sacramento, California, was tragically shot and killed on September 21, 2019. Dixon, who had recently graduated from Grant High School and was attending college in Texas, was back in Sacramento with plans to transfer to another college. On the afternoon of his death, Dixon was in the passenger seat of a car, hanging out with friends in the Del Paso Heights area.
Around 3:45 p.m., the car was ambushed, and Dixon was fatally shot. His girlfriend, who was on the phone with him just minutes before the shooting, described him as the love of her life and someone she saw a future with.
The Sacramento Police Department launched an investigation into Dixon's death, but initially, no suspects were identified. The community and Dixon's family were left in shock and grief, holding memorials and cookouts to honor his memory and raise funds for his funeral. Dixon was remembered as a caring and determined young man who had overcome significant challenges to pursue his education and dreams.
The investigation eventually led to the arrest of Keondre Pratt, who was charged with Dixon's murder. Pratt, also 19 at the time, was accused of targeting Dixon as part of a gang-related shooting. Prosecutors revealed that Pratt had a history of violent behavior, including a prior conviction that prohibited him from owning a firearm. Less than a week before Dixon's murder, Pratt had fired multiple shots at a rival gang member's vehicle.
In July 2021, Pratt was convicted of first-degree murder, with the jury finding that the crime was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang. The conviction carried a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case highlighted the ongoing issue of gang violence in Sacramento and the devastating impact it has on young lives and their families. Dixon's family expressed a mix of relief and sorrow at the conviction, hoping that justice for Syncere would bring some measure of peace.
