Matthew Caquelin, a 26-year-old resident of Sacramento, California, was found dead on November 25, 2015. His body was discovered by a fiber-optics work crew in a field near West Elverta Road, between Interstate 5 and Highway 99. The crew called 911 at approximately 7:15 a.m. to report the body. Upon arrival, Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputies found Caquelin with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Sacramento Metro Fire personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
The discovery of his body and the nature of his injuries immediately led to a homicide investigation.
The investigation quickly identified Scot Sequeira, a 28-year-old man from Sacramento, as a suspect. Detectives arrested Sequeira on December 16, 2015, in Newman, California, without incident. It was revealed that Sequeira and Caquelin were acquaintances, although the exact nature of their relationship and the motive behind the shooting remained unclear. Despite extensive investigation, detectives were unable to determine why the two men were in the rural area of North Sacramento County at the time of the murder.
Sequeira was booked into the Sacramento County Jail and was ineligible for bail. He was scheduled to be arraigned in Sacramento Superior Court on December 18, 2015. The case drew significant attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and the lack of a clear motive. Investigators continued to seek information from the public to piece together the events leading up to Caquelin's death. The case highlighted the challenges law enforcement faces in solving homicides where the victim and suspect have a known but unclear relationship, and where the motive remains elusive.
