On June 7, 2023, in Modesto, California, 37-year-old Emmanuel Gomez was fatally shot while attempting to intervene in a vehicle burglary targeting his neighbor. Around 4:30 a.m., Gomez noticed three individuals burglarizing his neighbor's car and decided to follow them in his vehicle. As the suspects fled, one of them fired multiple rounds at Gomez, striking him at least once. This caused Gomez to lose control of his truck, crashing into a nearby orchard on Monticello Lane.
He was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
The Modesto Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit promptly initiated an investigation, leading to the arrest of three suspects. The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Deshawn Austin, was apprehended and charged with homicide, being armed with a firearm while committing a felony, and burglary. Additionally, two 16-year-old juveniles were arrested and face charges of burglary.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community, with neighbors recalling Gomez as a family man and a good neighbor.
