On the night of August 6, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded at an Applebee's restaurant located at 32400 Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City, California. The altercation began around 11:30 p.m. when a fight broke out involving several individuals inside the establishment. During the confrontation, 31-year-old Cathedral City resident Ernesto Lazcano Arroyo was fatally shot. Emergency responders transported Arroyo to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In the course of their investigation, Cathedral City Police Department detectives, in collaboration with the Riverside County Gang Impact Team, identified two suspects: 33-year-old Willie R. Bustamante and 30-year-old Antonio Portillo, both residents of Cathedral City. Bustamante was arrested at his residence on Dinah Shore Drive and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility on murder charges. Portillo was also taken into custody and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center.
As the legal proceedings advanced, Bustamante faced trial for the shooting death of Arroyo. During the trial, it was revealed that both men were casual acquaintances dining separately with their respective wives on the night of the incident. However, he was convicted of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. Following the verdict, Bustamante was remanded into custody without bail, pending sentencing scheduled for December 13, 2024. He faces a potential prison term ranging from three to eleven years.
