Isaiah Guerra, a 17-year-old resident of Cathedral City, California, tragically lost his life on April 4, 2020. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. near the intersection of Avenida Alvera and McCallum Way. According to the Cathedral City Police Department, Guerra was found inside his vehicle, which had crashed into a tree. Upon closer inspection, officers discovered that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the life-saving efforts of the Cathedral City Fire paramedics, Guerra succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into Guerra's death led to the arrest of Juan Garcia-Landeros, a 21-year-old resident of Cathedral City. Garcia-Landeros was apprehended on April 6, 2020, just two days after the shooting, in the 33300 Block of Shifting Sands Trail. He was charged with murder and pleaded not guilty to the charges. Additionally, Garcia-Landeros denied a sentence-enhancing allegation of discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury. Despite having no documented felony criminal convictions in Riverside County, Garcia-Landeros had an unresolved felony attempted robbery case pending in Riverside County Superior Court, which included a misdemeanor resisting arrest charge.
The case against Garcia-Landeros proceeded through the legal system, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 15, 2020. During this hearing, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Otis Sterling found that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence to hold Garcia-Landeros to proceed to trial on the murder charge. The trial date was set for September 17, 2024. Throughout the investigation, no clear motive for the shooting was disclosed. Surveillance footage from several homes in the area played a crucial role in piecing together the events of that night, ultimately leading to Garcia-Landeros' arrest.
