The incident occurred during a small gathering at a home in Cathedral City. Christian Isaiah Jimenez, a 24-year-old man from San Bernardino, was identified as the shooter. According to court records, Jimenez attended the party on August 18, 2019, with a few friends who were unknown to the host.
At some point during the evening, Jimenez was found in the host's parents' room, leading to suspicions of theft. The host's alarmed reaction caused Jimenez and his friend to flee the scene.
Jimenez returned to the party twice after the initial confrontation. The second return, shortly after midnight on August 19, 2019, led to a fatal encounter with Sosa. As Sosa approached Jimenez, demanding the return of the allegedly stolen property, Jimenez issued a warning and began counting down, ultimately firing the shot that killed Sosa. Sosa was found suffering from gunshot wounds on a sidewalk in the 68300 block of Madrid Road. Despite life-saving efforts by police and paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
The legal proceedings following the incident were extensive. Jimenez was arrested on September 3, 2019, after being tracked to a residence in Needles, California. He faced charges of murder with a sentence-enhancing allegation of discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury. During the trial, the prosecution argued that Jimenez acted with intent, while the defense claimed he fired in self-defense, believing Sosa was about to shoot him. On June 13, 2023, Jimenez was convicted of one felony count of murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 40 years to life in state prison on August 7, 2023.
