On December 17, 2023, at approximately 4:20 a.m., San Jose police responded to reports of a shooting near Snow and Giusti Drives, adjacent to Great Oaks Park in South San Jose. Upon arrival, officers found evidence of gunfire but no victims at the scene. Shortly thereafter, two men arrived at a local hospital, each suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men, identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office as 30-year-old Adolfo Yanez-Patino, succumbed to his injuries.
The other man's injuries were not life-threatening, and he was stabilized.
Following an extensive investigation, San Jose Police Department detectives identified two suspects: 20-year-old Joshua Sodapop Bocanegra of San Jose and 20-year-old Michael Carabajal of Gilroy. On February 15, 2024, the SJPD Covert Response Unit apprehended Bocanegra in San Francisco and Carabajal in Gilroy. Both suspects were arrested without incident and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of homicide and attempted homicide.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers program, with potential cash rewards for information leading to an arrest.
