Kameron Thompson, a 15-year-old from San Jose, California, tragically lost his life on January 6, 2019, in what was initially reported as an accidental shooting. Kameron, a student at Silver Creek High School and a dedicated football player, was at a home on Thistlewood Court with two other teenage boys. The boys were handling two handguns that belonged to the grandfather of one of the boys. The grandfather, who suffered from dementia, had the firearms in the home.
The teens were recording themselves with the guns, using them as props, when one of the boys, a 14-year-old, loaded a bullet into one of the firearms out of curiosity. While handling the loaded gun, it discharged, striking Kameron and causing fatal injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately did not survive.
The incident was initially treated as an accidental shooting by the San Jose police. The 14-year-old boy who fired the gun was cited for negligent discharge of a firearm and released to his parents. The police investigation concluded that the shooting was accidental, and no homicide-related charges were filed against the boy. However, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office later declared the death a homicide, based on the definition of "a death at the hands of another." Despite this ruling, the case did not result in any further criminal charges, and the boy's name was not released due to his minor status.
The tragic death of Kameron Thompson highlighted the dangers of unsecured firearms in homes, especially those with vulnerable individuals such as the elderly with medical conditions. The case also underscored the importance of gun safety education for teenagers. The community mourned the loss of Kameron, who was remembered as a sociable, funny, and positive young man who had a bright future ahead of him. His family and friends organized a fundraiser to help cover the hospital and funeral expenses, and a vigil was held at his school to honor his memory.
