Wilmer Spikes Jr., a 67-year-old resident of San Jose, California, was tragically killed in a shooting on October 26, 2019. The incident occurred in downtown San Jose, near the intersection of East Santa Clara and North 5th streets. According to the San Jose Police Department, the shooting was reported just before 5:30 p.m. When patrol officers arrived at the scene, they found Spikes and another man suffering from gunshot wounds.
Spikes was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The other victim survived with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. This incident marked the 31st homicide in San Jose for the year 2019.
The investigation into Spikes' death led to significant developments over the following months. Initially, no arrests were made, and the case remained under active investigation. However, by April 2020, the San Jose Police Department announced the arrests of five individuals in connection with the shooting. The first suspect, Juan VelazquezTellez, a 23-year-old resident of San Jose, was apprehended shortly after the shooting and charged with murder. Subsequent investigations identified four additional suspects: Israel Arroyo, 25; Miles Guzman, 35; Alberto Hernandez, 20; and Samuel Arroyo, 29, all residents of San Jose.
Israel Arroyo and Miles Guzman were arrested on November 6, 2019, and both were charged with murder. Alberto Hernandez was taken into custody on February 11, 2020, while attending court for an unrelated case, and he was charged with conspiracy. The final suspect, Samuel Arroyo, was arrested on April 30, 2020, and also faced a conspiracy charge. All five suspects remained in custody following their arrests.
The arrests and subsequent charges brought some measure of closure to the case, but the investigation into the motives and circumstances surrounding the shooting continued.
