On May 21, 2024, Senior Deputy Benjamin Alan Michael Harmonson, aged 36, was found deceased near a vehicle on Seventh Standard Road, close to Shafter, California. The Kern County Coroner's Office determined that Harmonson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ruling his death a suicide.
Harmonson had a distinguished 16-year career with the Kern County Sheriff's Office (KCSO).
He began as a deputy sheriff trainee on July 19, 2008, and was promoted to full deputy on January 17, 2008. Throughout his tenure, he served in various capacities, including assignments in Mojave, Rosamond, the Electronic Monitoring Program Unit, Narcotics, Lamont, Tehachapi, and the Bomb Squad. In 2013, he was named Rosamond Deputy of the Year. He achieved the rank of Senior Deputy on November 5, 2022, and was later assigned to the Tehachapi substation.
Following his death, a GoFundMe campaign was established by his family to cover funeral expenses, highlighting his "silent battle with mental illness." The campaign resonated with the community, surpassing its initial goal of $8,000 and raising over $40,000.
Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood expressed condolences, stating, "Ben worked for the Sheriff's Office for 16 years and was one of our best... Ben will be missed for sure." He emphasized the department's respect for Harmonson's family during this difficult time.
