In the small town of Fredericktown, Missouri, the evening of August 5, 1989, marked the beginning of a profound and lasting mystery with the disappearance of 13-year-old Gina Dawn Brooks. After returning home around 10:00 p.m. from her brother's baseball game, the young girl with blonde hair and green eyes decided to go for a short bicycle ride to a friend's house, promising her brother she would be back soon.
She was last seen wearing a blue striped top, white shorts, and white tennis shoes. Witnesses later reported seeing Gina near her church, speaking to the driver of a battered station wagon, described as being light blue, gray, or green. Not long after she rode away, a scream pierced the night air, and a vehicle was heard speeding off. Gina never returned home. Her ten-speed bicycle was later discovered abandoned on a residential lawn on High Street, just five blocks from her house, but Gina herself had vanished without a trace.
The investigation into Gina's disappearance soon focused on three men with criminal histories. Nathan D. 'Danny' Williams was charged with her murder in 1999 after a witness identified him as the man sitting in the back of the station wagon with Gina on the night she was taken. The suspected driver of the vehicle was identified as Bryant Squires. Before his death from cancer and AIDS-related complications, Squires allegedly made a deathbed statement to nurses, implicating both himself and Williams in Gina's abduction and murder. A third man, Timothy R. Bellew, a friend of both Williams and Squires, was also implicated. Bellew later admitted to lying to FBI agents, falsely claiming Gina's body was buried in an abandoned meat freezer on his father's property, which led to extensive but fruitless searches.
Despite the witness statements and Squires' alleged confession, the path to justice has been fraught with setbacks. Timothy Bellew was initially charged with second-degree murder, but the charge was dropped for lack of evidence; he was instead convicted of lying to investigators and sentenced to 30 months in prison. In 2003, the first-degree murder charge against Nathan Williams was also dropped, as prosecutors felt there was not enough evidence to secure a conviction at trial. Williams, who is also a suspect in the 1979 disappearance of another young girl, remains in prison serving a life sentence for unrelated convictions of forcible rape and sodomy. Although the official charges were dropped, authorities have stated they still believe these men were involved in what they presume was Gina's murder. The case remains an active and ongoing investigation, with law enforcement continuing to follow up on any new information that emerges.
