In the autumn of 1996, a 40-year-old woman named Jamie Ellen Pankey vanished from Kansas City, Missouri, under troubling circumstances. The last confirmed contact with Pankey was on October 1, 1996, when she reached out to the Kansas City Police Department to report a robbery that had just taken place in the 600 block of East 6th Street.
