On November 1, 2024, at approximately 12:46 a.m., Santa Maria police officers responded to reports of gunfire at a fast-food restaurant on the 400 block of East Betteravia Road. The incident stemmed from a dispute between two groups, escalating into a shooting that injured two individuals: 18-year-old Robert Estrada of Nipomo and a 17-year-old male. Both victims were transported to Marian Regional Medical Center, where the 17-year-old was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Robert Estrada succumbed to his injuries on November 5, 2024.
Following an investigation, detectives identified 41-year-old Casey Jose Pacheco Hernandez of Santa Maria and his 19-year-old son, Casey Hernandez Jr. of Oceano, as primary suspects. On November 1, law enforcement executed search warrants at their respective residences, resulting in their arrests. The vehicle allegedly used in the incident was found abandoned in Santa Maria and was seized as evidence.
The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office charged both men with the murder of Robert Estrada and four counts of attempted murder. Additionally, Casey Pacheco Hernandez faced charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm. During their arraignment on November 6, both defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges and were held without bail at the Santa Barbara County Jail. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for November 14, 2024.
Robert Estrada's death deeply affected his family and the community. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support his family during this challenging time, highlighting his loving nature, radiant smile, and ambition. Funeral services were arranged by Moreno Mortuary, with a Funeral Mass held on November 22 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, followed by burial at Santa Maria Cemetery.
