In the quiet city of Johnson City, Tennessee, the life of a talented and passionate artist, Elijah Taylor Berry, was tragically cut short. Known to many by his stage name, Godfrey Daniels, the 32-year-old White / Caucasian male was a cherished friend, son, and brother. His love for acting and film was evident to all who knew him, a passion he had nurtured since childhood with idols like Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.
He was a familiar face in regional theaters, including the Jonesborough Repertory Theatre and the Johnson City Community Theatre, and was dedicated to sharing his love for the arts by hosting silent film screenings and teaching children's acting courses.
On the evening of January 3, 2023, police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on Lone Oak Road. Upon arrival, they discovered Elijah Berry deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. The investigation that followed revealed that an altercation had occurred between Berry and another man, 31-year-old Ronald Bernier.
The dispute escalated, tragically culminating in Bernier allegedly shooting Berry. Bernier was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged with second-degree murder. He was taken to the Washington County Detention Center and held on a $100,000 bond. His arraignment took place in Washington County General Sessions Court the following day. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal altercation is ongoing.
